SOCIAL SCIENCE FELLOWSHIPS FOR DOCTORAL STUDY IN
MEDICAL SOCIOLOGY, HEALTH ECONOMICS AND MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGY

2008 Competition

The Hanoi School of Public Health (HSPH) announces the competition for doctoral-level Fellowships in Medical Sociology, Health Economics and Medical Anthropology. Funds for this program have been provided by the Ford Foundation. The goal of this program is to enable the Hanoi School of Public Health to address both current and longer-term public health needs in Vietnam.

Study Program

This doctoral program is divided into four phases and spans approximately 40 months. During the first phase, to span up to 18-24 months, the candidate will complete required coursework at the host University (in the USA, Europe or Australia). In phase two, candidates will return to Vietnam to design their research proposal. During this phase a second trip to host University (approximately 3 months) will be scheduled for discussion of the research proposal with the doctoral advisory committee. In phase three, the candidate will focus on FIELD RESEARCH (approximately one year) on a topic in the field of sexuality and/or reproductive and sexual health and rights. In phase four the candidate will return to the host University for a third time to finalize the data analysis, write his/her dissertation and defend it. This final phase is likely to take 8 months.

Eligibility:

Candidates who wish to compete for these fellowships must:

1. Hold a masters degree in the social sciences (Anthropology, Sociology, Finance/Economics, etc.) or a master’s degree in public health with a concentration in the health social sciences.

2. Demonstrate proven ability in English (580 TOEFL score or 7.0 IELTS) and complete the GRE test. GRE is required right after selection

3. Be less than 40 years old

4. Have completed at least two years of teaching experience, research or community/service based activities in the social sciences or public health

5. Have an interest in conducting social science research, particularly in the field of sexuality and reproductive health Receive written approval from her/his employer (public or private)

6. Provide written commitment to work, on a full time basis, for the HSPH for at least 3 years upon return.

Note: Non-HSPH candidates will be required to participate in an orientation/preparation phase during which they will be under contract to HSPH upon acceptance to this fellowship program (this period is about 8-12 months).

All candidates must complete and submit application forms and required attachments to the Center for Educational Exchange with Vietnam (CEEVN)

v Interview and Selection: September 2008

v Submit GRE scores: October 2008

v Arrangement for University Placements: Oct-Dec, 2008

All fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis. HSPH and CEEVN will process applications, conduct language testing and call qualified candidates for interviews. An international selection committee will meet to interview and nominate candidates for fellowships. Interviews may be by telephone if/when necessary. HSPH and CEEVN will jointly determine academic placements and manage fellows’ study programs. Fellowships can only be confirmed after the nominated candidate gains admission to the doctoral degree program.
