Disasters (natural and man-made disasters) have severely affected human health and the development of the whole society as well. Disasters can take place at any time, any where in the world.
Vietnam is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world and is ranked in the top ten countries by the number of disasters and the top twenty countries by number of people affected Disaster is recognized as a public health issue. Because disaster is of great importance to human health, Hanoi School of Public Health is the first university in
Vietnam to establish this department with the following tasks:

  1. Fomulating training programme and courses on Disaster Management for Bachelor of Public Health students.
  2. Conducting studies on disaster management, especially on public health aspects of disasters in order to contribute to the protection of people from adverse health impacts of disasters.
  3. Building the collaborative relations and work with national and international agencies and organizations in the field of disasters  (e.g. Ministry of Health, Disaster Management Unit (DMU) of Vietnam and UNDP, WHO, ADPC, PAHO etc.)  in order to improve staff competencies in disaster management.
