The Center for Injury Policy and Prevention Research

In 1999, HSPH has developed a national network for injury research of which consists of all public health faculties and institutions throughout Viet Nam. Under the coordination of HSPH, the network, then known as the Viet Nam Public Health Research Network (VPHRN), conducted several community-based surveys on mortality, morbidity and disability. These studies confirmed the suspicion that the reported national injury data, which relies heavily on hospital and police records, significantly under-represents the true injury situation. Thus, HSPH endeavored to develop and implement a nationally representative and population-based research on fatal and nonfatal outcomes of injury.

In 2001, VPHRN with a support of an international group conducted The Viet Nam Multi-center Injury Survey (VMIS) to examine injury incident rates in Viet Nam. This was not only the first national-in-scope activity of VPHRN but also served as a core advocacy tool to raise awareness for policy makers and to develop injury prevention programs in Viet Nam.

In 2002, HSPH, in recognition of its mission to provide data that allows the national policymakers to make informed decisions, has established the Center for Injury Policy and Prevention Research (CIPPR) at the school.

Our Goal

Recognition the role of an academic institution as a part of injury prevention process in Viet Nam, CIPPR should actively involve more in the injury prevention activities in the coming years. With the expertise and experiences in injury research and training, CIPPR could provide valuable inputs for the injury prevention of Viet Nam.

In line with the development strategy of HSPH for 2005-2015 and in assuring the growth and continued development of CIPPR, we have developed a Master Plan for the period 2007 to 2012. This Plan will help us to identify priorities and guide our direction in achieving our goal of becoming a self-sustain and center of excellent in the area of injury research, training and support for policy development in Viet Nam.

Our Vision

CIPPR is committed to creating a learning research and training center for the promotion of community-faculty-student collaboration on injury related issues.

The center will soon be a leading entity to provide training, knowledge and consulting services in the fields of injury prevention and intervention for national, local and international institutions in Viet Nam and other countries in the region.

Our Mission

Our mission is to build the field of injury prevention and control Viet Nam through a combination of multidisciplinary public health approaches to research, intervention, and evaluation as well as through the training of the next generation of researchers and practitioners in Viet Nam.

Our Specific Objectives
